Many people around the world, including Indonesians, have relinquished responsibility for governing themselves, expecting government to solve their problems. This tendency has created weak and dependent society. We believe that the betterment of society starts from the bottom up, through virtuous individuals and families and communities, not from the top down through more or big government. We consider that the survival of free society depends on the good character and virtue of the individuals. Virtue or morality is a necessary spring of national prosperity. Therefore, character education is a national need; it is as important as food, health, clothing, and shelter. It is a national need that depends on the participation of concerned and responsible individuals in supporting character-building efforts in their respective communities.
You are therefore invited to share our vision to build a nation of character. We foresee to have a world where schools, families, and communities work together to nurture the character development, and academic performance of all children. We want our children to become knowledgeable and engaged life-long learners who are self-aware, socially aware, caring and connected to others, creative and independent-minded thinkers, and responsible decision-makers. All children will achieve to their fullest potential, participating fully, productively, and constructively in a free and open society.
Our efforts that have been implemented since June 2000 including our school pilot projects could be used as a new strategy in regenerating deprived community with the philosophy that equipping people with virtues (includes in 9 pillars of characters) are central to new approaches to community regeneration.

We therefore invite all interested individuals or parties to become champions in community character regeneration. What else is more important than to help shape the moral and direction of our community?

How To Become a Character-Building Champion

  1. You could start a preschool by adopting the Comprehensive Model of Character Education for Preschool Children (Semai Benih Bangsa or SBB- Planting the Nation's Seeds) in a poor community. You could mobilize the community in the SBB prospective location(s) (see Proposal In English and bahasa Indonesia).
  2. You could give donations to IHF for opening up SBB. IHF will choose the locations, especially in poor communities in Jakarta, Depok, and Bogor areas. IHF will give report to the sponsors about the opening process of SBB, and the locations. The sponsor could put his/her name in the name plate sign of SBB School (see Proposal In English and bahasa Indonesia)
  3. You could sponsor the existing schools to adopt the 9Pillar character education and/or 9pillar character-based integrated curriculums, especially in public schools where the majority of Indonesian children are enrolled (see Services). The newly launched government policy on School-Based Management system (Manajemen Berbasis Sekolah-MBS), is a golden opportunity for us to alter the existing long-held practice of one-way, rigid, fragmented, passive, and unpleasant way of learning that have made the quality of Indonesia's human resource as among the worst in the world. MBS policy gives a legal autonomy for each school to improve itself by adopting any better quality curriculums that could create joyful, more productive learning experience, and thus individuals with character. Also, this policy enables individuals to participate in building better school system in their own communities ( see proposal paket ABC in bahasa Indonesia (PDF Format) )
  4. You could support IHF programs and activities by purchasing products and materials provided by IHF, or subscribe the three monthly SBB Bulletin published by IHF (see. IHF Program and activities).
  5. You could support IHF programs and activities by spreading the words about IHF or any other contributions.

Corporations/Companies or Local Government Could Adopt our Programs in their Community Development Efforts

Corporations or business communities could adopt the IHF programs as a part of their Community Development Programs. For example, Exxon Mobil Oil is adopting the SBB model for their community educational development in the district of North Aceh by sponsoring the opening up of 24 new SBB sites in 2004. Sponsorship of the SBB schools is especially important in communities where no kindergarten has been established.

Beside the immediate goals of corporate public affairs to gain acceptance and support from local community, the presence of corporations should give positive externalities to the surrounding community that could encourage local community to rediscover the strength, and growth from within. Therefore, any efforts to increase societal virtues (i.e. building community of self-reliance, helping to break the mentality of dependence, increasing people sense of control over issues that affect their lives), are supposed to be the prophetic mission of all business community. Improving early education programs to build civil ethos and characters can be a good strategy for this endeavor, since internalizing virtues would be very effective if done since early ages.

Local Government

Unlike during the New Order Era that was ended in 1998, in which all government policies are centrally planned and top down, in this era of autonomy all local governments could now formulate their own independent policies, especially in the area of education. It is widely accepted that the key to success in a competitive globalization era is how well a society equipped with "social capital" (i.e. societal virtues). It is the interest of every local government to increase the "social capital" in order to increase its competitiveness. For this reason, each local government could facilitate the creation of community-based preschool activities, as well as endorsing the adoption of new school curriculums (under the scheme of School-Based Management Policy). For example, the local district government of North Aceh has been adopting the SBB model in their community development efforts. As for now, there are 27 SBB locations (financed by the local government) that are available for children in destitute areas, and 48 locations (partly financed by Exxon Mobil Oil) would soon be opened in the near future. It is highly recommended by IHF that the daily operational SBB School be financed by the community, in order to prevent the possible emergence of entitlement attitude and dependency of the people.

Your Contribution Will Be A Perpetual Endowment Ensuing A Stream of Benefits for the Community

If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests. Kuan Chung

Spending money in the cause of truth: "The parable of those who spend their substance in the way of God is that of a grain of corn: it groweth seven ears, and each ear hath a hundred grains. God giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: and God careth for all and He knoweth all things." (Qoran 2:261).

The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) said: When the human being dies, his/her deeds will come to an end except three kinds: Sadaqah Jariah (continuous charity), beneficial knowledge, and a good child that will pray for him/her. (Muslim).

Sadaqah Jariah is distinct from ordinary alms giving by its continual service, and ensuing a stream of benefits for the whole community. Thus any charity having continual service and benefits as its objectives is a Sadaqah Jariah. In other words, it is an endowment that produces a repetitive flow of services for the community. Setting up schools or improving school methods or curriculum that could generate humans with good character, is indeed another form of endowment (Sadaqah Jariah) resulting a stream of benefits for the whole community; the benefactor's deeds that will never end.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."
- Bible, II Corinthians 9:7

"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again."
-Bible, Luke 6:38

"Anticipate charity by preventing poverty; assist the reduced fellow man, either by a considerable gift or a sum of money or by teaching him a trade or by putting him in the way of business so that he may earn an honest livelihood and not be forced to the dreadful alternative of holding out his hand for charity. This is the highest step and summit of charity's golden ladder." Maimonides (1135-1204)

"Deeds of giving are the very foundations of the world." The Torah
