Indonesia Heritage Foundation Profile

Indonesia Heritage Foundation or Yayasan Badan Wakaf Warisan Nilai Luhur Indonesia, is a nonprofit organization initiated by Dr. Ratna Megawangi and Dr. Sofyan Djalil in June 2000 ( legally formalized by the public notary in September 2001 No. 578/ANP/2001).

The establishment of IHF is a result of our concerns about Indonesia's societal problems today which is threatened by a cultural decline unprecedented in the nation's history. The presence of corrupt culture (shown by government officials, politicians, and other segments of population), the declining of work ethics, aspirations towards consumptive orientation, inter-ethnic conflicts, juvenile delinquency, is parts of the declining of societal moral characters.

In the face of the coming globalization era, lack of societal virtues could jeopardize the fate of Indonesia in the future. Also, lack of societal moral characters could endanger the creation of free or democratic society. Free society can only work where people trust each other in all daily transactions. This situation is only possible if vast majority of the people are endowed with good characters such as self-reliance, self-governing, caring and trustworthy, so that they could interact voluntarily and peacefully with another. If not, people will relinquish their personal responsibility, and have to rely on government subsidy and coercion to guarantee compliance with the laws against force or fraud. If too many people are not equipped with good characters, or if too many are not self-regulating, the society cannot survive, because there would be too many people who are weak, dependent, irresponsible, and untrustworthy.

The following questions are therefore justified, "How people become trustworthy?", "How people develop sense of right and wrong and adhere to what they believed as right principle?". "Do we have effectively taught our children learn right from wrong?" "How do we teach them to be the kind of people who enhance rather than diminish the quality of life in our society?", "How do we pass on to them a sense of morality, values, and social responsibility?" Finding answers to these questions is the basic reason behind the establishment of "Indonesia Heritage Foundation" (Yayasan Badan Wakaf Warisan Nilai Luhur Indonesia). This foundation is therefore dedicated to the enhancement of societal moral characters of the nation.

Building a nation of character in Indonesia (industriousness, willingness to take responsibilities, self reliance, tolerance, respect differences, honesty, trustworthy, and eagerness to help others), which could strongly support the creation of free society in sustainable ways. These character traits will make freedom, harmony, and prosperity flourish.
